Should you seek credit counseling?

Before going to a credit counselor there are things you might not know. A Credit counselor doesn't have any special rights that you don't. Credit counselor job is to assess your financial position and if needed, to help you manage a negotiation with your creditors. You can do anything that a credit counselor does. Yet, many people prefer using a credit counselor instead of doing this alone.

Consumer debt counselors are experienced in managing negotiation and making debt management plans. If you're having hard times managing your credit cards and other debts you might consider credit counseling as a solution.

The first step that credit counselor will do is assess your position and then build a plan for you. Of course a good counselor will show you several options and not only one option. After that the counselor will contact you creditors and try to work out on a settlement so you'll either pay less to your creditor or spread your payments on longer period.

Basically, credit counseling will not affect your credit score. However, it might be harder to get financing in the future. A lender will probably look on your credit counseling participation unfavorably.

So how do you decide whether you should turn to a credit counseling agency or not? Ask yourself those questions:

1. Can you make the minimum payments on all of your credit cards?
2. Do you always late on your monthly payments?
3. Have you received harassing calls from your creditors?
4. Did you try to manage negotiation with your creditors and failed?

If you decided to get help from a counselor you have to choose it wisely, unprofessional credit counselor might cause more problem and lead you into more debts.

There are two types of credit counseling agencies; the one, nonprofit while the other is for profit. The nonprofit counselors will show you all of your available options while the for profit counselor will try to push you in one direction, that direction of course is profiting the company. You should really beware of who you are asking help from, many agencies like to show themselves as non-profit agency while in reality, they are working for commissions.

If you are still not sure, just go and read about credit counseling and debt management on this website or any other website. We believe that credit counseling is much better solution than a bankruptcy. Our suggestion is to get advised by a credit counselor and see what your options are.
